poker

Poker is a very popular card game. This game came about in the early 19th Century in the United States of America. Since the game started, it has become a sensation around the world. It is a card game that’s played in casinos, at home, and even online!

Over the years, different versions of the game developed from the initial New Orleans favorite. The most played versions of this card game today are as follows:

  1. Texas Hold’em
  2. 7 Card Stud
  3. Omaha Hi
  4. 2-7 Triple Draw

The standard amount of cards used in this card game is a 52 card pack. In most clubs, the dealer will permit players to ask for new cards whenever they feel like it. When the game is the dealer’s choice, the dealer changes the type of poker each round. The dealer can then assign the wild cards, the ante, and the max limit of the chips wagered in each hand.

In this article, we’ll explore the different types of the game, what are the guidelines and rules, and who the top-earning players are. We’ll also take a look at video poker and other aspects of this beloved card game. On ifPoker, we also cover the art of counting cards and whether it is illegal to count cards or no.

Different Poker Variations

Since the game started, there have been quite a few different varieties of the game created. In this section, we’ll be having a look at a few of them.

  • Texas Hold’em

Two cards get handed to each of the players. The game starts with the player on the left of the big blind and carries on clockwise. Players may then call, raise, or fold. After the first round, three cards get handed out onto the table, which we call the “flop.” The “community cards” are for players to be able to use at the same time to try and have the best poker hand.

  • 7 Card Stud

This form of poker is quite different. Players that get given a hand must put forward an ante. After this, players receive two face-down cards and one card face-up. The player with the lowest face-up card plays first. This player must make a little “bring-in” bet or a bet of the smaller increase of the game. Betting goes on in a clockwise direction.

  • Omaha Hi

This game is almost exactly like Texas Hold’em, but with one minor difference. It has four hole cards instead of the two that are dealt to each player. Players must use two of the four hole cards and three of their 5  community cards. Making a good hand is much easier in this game.

  • The 2-7 Triple Draw

In this version of poker, the five cards get handed out to the players and a round of bets takes place. Players can choose to get rid of all their cards and draw up to 5 new ones. There are three draws that occur in each hand. Following each of the rounds, there’s another stage of bets. This always begins with the first player still in the hand.

Guidelines, Rules, and Strategies

poker cards

Poker gets played with a pack of 52 cards, and the cards get ranked from high to low. The King, The Queen, The Jack are high. The Ace can be high or low, but it is often used as a high. No suit is higher than another suit, and all hands have five cards. The highest hand wins the game.

Some of the games have what we call the wild cards. The wild cards can take on whichever suit and whichever rank the possessor wants. The jokers’ are often used as wild cards.

How are the hands ranked?

  • Five of a Kind
  • Straight
  • Four of a Kind
  • Full House
  • Flush
  • High Card
  • Three of a Kind
  • Two Pair
  • Pair
  • Straight Flush

There are a few crucial things to remember when playing. Some of the most important things are as follows:

  1. Use implied odds
  2. Track your results
  3. Play fewer hands
  4. Pay attention to the table
  5. Bluff

These few tips will help you better your chances of winning the pot.

Video Poker and Live Poker

This version is the same as five-card draw. It’s played on a digital device that is almost the same size as a slot machine, and of course, at online casinos all over the world. Players deposit coins or push the ”Bet One Credit” or ”Bet Max” buttons, depending on the version.

The machine chooses five numbers, which it transfers into card pictures. Now the player has received a hand and can start the game. Many of the rules tell a player how to handle their chips, from how to stack them to how a player places bets. It’s essential to know these rules before playing.

On the other hand, live Poker is played in a casino, with the dealer facing the players, usually in a horseshoe configuration.
